Balayage vs Highlights vs Foilyage: Which Colour Technique Is Right for You?
"I want lighter hair but I'm not sure what to book." We hear it in the consultation chair every week. The three most-requested colour services - balayage, highlights, and foilyage - sound similar, look different in results, and have very different price points and upkeep.
Here's the honest breakdown from our Stylist team at Envy Beauty Den.
Traditional highlights
Sections of hair are woven and wrapped in foil with lightener. The heat from the foil lifts the hair more uniformly and closer to the root.
Look: Bright, dimensional, evenly distributed
Grow-out: Visible line at 6–8 weeks
Best for: Anyone wanting bright blonde or bold contrast; special occasions
Balayage
Colour is hand-painted onto the surface of the hair with no foils, letting the lightener process open to air. Placement is freehand and softer.
Look: Sun-kissed, low-contrast, natural
Grow-out: Very soft — 3+ months between appointments
Best for: Low-maintenance clients, natural-looking dimension, mid-length to long hair
Foilyage
A hybrid technique. Colour is hand-painted balayage-style, then wrapped in foil to lift lighter than open-air balayage can.
Look: Blends the softness of balayage with the brightness of highlights
Grow-out: 8–12 weeks
Best for: Clients who want brighter than balayage but softer than a full highlight
How to decide
Ask yourself three questions:
How often do I want to be in the salon? Balayage lasts longest.
Do I want bright or blended? Highlights = bright. Balayage = blended. Foilyage = both.
What's my starting point? Darker hair usually needs foilyage or highlights to lift enough.
