1. Rubber bands and elastics with metal clasps
Those little drugstore elastics with a metal joiner are the worst offenders in our chair. The metal snags strands and rips them out every time you take your hair down, and rubber bands stick to the cuticle and tear it on removal.
2. Thin, tight elastics worn in the same spot every day
Even a "nice" thin elastic creates a concentrated point of tension. Worn repeatedly in the same position — same ponytail height, same bun spot — it can lead to breakage and, over time, traction alopecia (gradual hair loss from constant pulling).
3. Metal claw clips and clips with sharp teeth
Trendy, but rigid metal teeth snag and pull at the root, and heavy clips create pressure points that weaken strands over time.
4. Metal bobby pins used as your daily go-to
Fine for a special-occasion style, but daily use grips the hair tightly and snaps it off at the tip.
5. Plastic headbands with teeth or ridges
They dig in at the hairline — exactly where those baby-hair flyaways come from.
6. Any tie, worn to sleep in, tight
Eight hours of tension plus tossing on a pillow equals morning breakage. If you must tie hair back overnight, keep it loose and low.
